Moments In Song №005 — Zack

Zack’s playlist both reflects on the past and looks towards the goals set for his future. Not to mention it’s a pretty fire soundtrack to your late night drive. The Data Analyst and die hard Ravens fan talks to us about his favorite artists and his mood for 2017.

Julian: What’s the general theme of your playlist?

Zack: Everything on there is fairly new. I tried to keep it within the past six month or so. I put some relationship songs in there. You know you can always relate to some relationship stuff. Some other stuff is just music I like to bump. There’s not too much heavy Hip-Hop on there. Most of it is kind of smooth, like late night, cruising around type of music. That was the kind of vibe I was going for.

You said these songs are from the past six months or so. I’m assuming they are kind of a reflection of where you’ve been in your life in the past six months. Would you say that’s correct?

Oh yeah definitely.

Could you sum that up for us and tell us how it influenced the choices you made for your playlist?

I think the first song I have on there was ‘Coming Out Strong’ by Future featuring The Weeknd. It’s pretty much my mood for 2017. I’ve been trying to come out strong. There’s a lot of stuff I want to accomplish. Both personally and professionally. Looking back at the relationship songs, like “Saved,” “Redbone,” “Just Saying,” and “Just Changed My Number,” they cover stuff that I’ve been through in the past and think about every so often. Those are the main two things that my playlist covers.

You told me earlier that when you were making this playlist, you had 20 songs at one point. What helped you narrow it down from 20 to 10. Why’d you pick theses 10 as opposed to some of the other songs you had in your earlier draft?

I think these 10 songs are pretty much songs I listen to on a daily basis, especially when I’m in the car. They’re songs that I pretty much go and put on purposely. The other songs are good, but they’re not songs that I listen to everyday. They’re just good songs that I came across, that I like. But as far as me actually riding to it, the 10 I selected stick to that more. 90% of the time I listen to music I’m in the car. I don’t play too much in the house. If I do, its more like background music and I’m not actually listening to it.

Aside from just the songs on your playlist, how would you describe your taste in music?

I think my taste in music is pretty consistent. I don’t venture to far off from R&B, Hip-Hop. Occasionally I’ll dip into house music, electronic music, and the occasional pop. So other than that I don’t stray from those core genres. I listen to gospel, but I don’t actively look for new gospel music. If it’s on the radio I’ll listen to it. I’m not looking it up like I do for Hip-Hop and R&B.

Looking at the artists on your playlist, would you say any of them are your favorite artists, or do they just have songs out that you’re playing right now. If they’re not your favorite artists, who would you say some of your favorite artists are?

Just going off the list, only a couple of the artist on there are in my Top 5. Top 5 artists right now in no particular order would be Gambino definitely; he just put some good stuff. Travis $cott, Future, Weeknd. Of course Tyler. Everything else on the list is just stuff I’ve been listening to recently.

Can you pick one song on your playlist, and give us the story behind it?

Alright, I’m going with The Internet ‘Just Sayin.’ Back to the whole relationship thing, what she’s saying in the song is pretty relevant. Just the chorus itself, ‘You fucked up.’ [Laughs.] Just telling somebody ‘Yo you fucked up.’ You’re upset with the person and you know they’re the ones who messed it up. It’s their loss at the end of the day. For the past 2 years of my life, that’s how I’ve been feeling in certain situations. That song definitely speaks volume and says a lot. It’s something that I had to put on here. I don’t think I hold grudges, but its always a reminder like, ‘Damn, I’m remembering this happened’ and ‘Damn this person really screwed that up.’ But you know, keep moving forward. Can’t hold on to old stuff.
